Preparing for Your First Day at an International School

Starting at a new school in a new country is exciting and scary. You will meet new people, learn new things, and face new challenges. Here is how to prepare so you feel ready.

Before You Go

Learn about your school. Visit the website. Look at photos. Find out where your classes will be. The more you know, the less nervous you will feel.

Practice introducing yourself. You will say your name many times on the first day. Practice a short introduction: "Hi, I'm [name]. I'm from [country]. I'm studying [subject]."

Prepare some questions. People like to help. If you have questions ready, it gives you something to say: "Where is the library?" "What time does lunch start?"

On Your First Day

Arrive early. Give yourself time to find your way. Being rushed makes everything harder.

Smile and say hello. You don't need perfect English to be friendly. A smile is understood in every language.

Don't worry about mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when they start something new. Your teachers and classmates understand.

After Your First Day

Write down what you learned. New words, new names, new places. Writing helps you remember.

Be kind to yourself. The first day is the hardest. It will get easier every day after that.

Celebrate that you did it! Starting something new takes courage. Be proud of yourself.

Remember: everyone was new once. The people around you want you to succeed. You are not alone.
